Adding one more asset to its underwater force, Indian Navy on 06 May 2019 launched fourth of Six Kalvari-class (Scorpene-class) diesel-electric attack submarines INS Vela at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, Mumbai.
According to an Indian Navy Official, Before its commission in Underwater Fleet of Indian Navy, It will go under extensive underwater trials by Navy. Before INS Vela, MDL has launched INS Kalvari, lead submarine of its class, INS Khanderi and INS Karanj. INS Kalvari has been commissioned in December 2017 with Pennant Number S21 and INS Khanderi is about to complete its sea trials and expected to get commissioned by Mid 2019. INS Karanj is still in sea trials likely to join fleet by end of this year.
